“How is discrimination shown in Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry?”

In my essay I’ll be writing about discrimination in the novel, “Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry”. Roll of Thunder was written by a woman name Mildred D. Taylor in 1976. She was born in Jackson, Mississippi and grew up in Ohio. After she graduated, she spent 2 years in Ethiopia with the Peace Corps. This whole book is all about racism. This idea is important because it tells us how life was in the 1930s for a little black girl who matures with racial conflict around her. It is about a young black girl, Cassie Logan, who tries to understand with her family and why the blacks are different to whites.

The first example of discrimination in the book is when the Jefferson Davis school bus kept on splashing onto Cassie, Christopher-John, Stacey and Little Man. They wanted to get revenge. Cassie and her brothers has just finished school. Little Man says to Big Ma,”Big Ma! Just look at my clothes! They did it again! That’s not fair!” This shows discrimination because the Jefferson Davis school were smiling and laughing while Little Man was being upset yet angry.

The second example of discrimination in the book is when Cassie and her brothers are in lesson and when Little Man looked at the columns, he was shocked as he saw the word ‘nigra’.He did not like the quality of the book as it has been used already. This angry boy threw the book and stamped all over it.As he was going to get whipped Cassie stood up, and  stated,”See what they called us!”Miz Crocker weakly said “That’s  what you are and go sit down!” This shows discrimination because white people destroys their old book when they’ve got no right.

The third example of discrimination in the novel is when Cassie said to Mr Barnett that they’ve been waiting for nearly an hour and got no rights and Mr Barnett called them “niggers.” Cassie was inside Mr Barnett’s store. He ask everyone “whose little nigger is this?” This shows discrimination because it insinuates that Cassie is a possession not a human being.

Finally, the final example of discrimination in the book is when Cassie bumps into Lillian Jean Simms and tells her to apologise however, she refused to do it. Then her dad comes and pushed her off the side walk and demanded her to apologize. Big Ma comes and tells Cassie to apologize. Cassie just came from Mr Barnett’s store. Lillian Jean says,”apologize, that ain’t enough get down on the road.” This shows discrimination because it shows that Cassie is being treated like a pet while Lillian standing there smiling like she is an unstoppable teenager and the way Mr Simms again pushed her off the side walk.

After this essay we conclude that racism was still used to black people after share cropping, still today racism is still used in our daily basis this family understand the meaning to work together ,be brave and strong. I think Mildred D. Taylor has achieved her objectives.
